The preposition "de" 
"de" has the basic meaning of  "of" or  "from"
The simple English prepositions “of,” “from,” and “by,” as well as a few compound prepositions, 
are all translated in specific situations to the Spanish preposition "de", 
and "de" is also used  with so many expressions (idioms),  is part of many compound prepositions,  and has various meanings.
Let understand it better with some examples:
The preposition "de" followed by "el"  contracts with the definite article "el"   into "del" ( de+ el = del)
as the same it does the preposition "a"( a + el = al).
Jordan es el mas alto del (de + el) grupo. Jordan is the taller of the group.
Me gustó la función del domingo. I enjoy the last Sunday's show.
Ese es el auto del entrenador. That is the coach's car.
Remember that these contractions do not occur with others definite articles or with the pronoun "él" (he).
La vista de la montaña es lindísima.  The view of the mountain is very beautiful.
No acepto ningún dinero de él.  I do not accept any money from him.
 The preposition "de"  is appropriate in several situations like :
The preposition "de" links two nouns, is used between two nouns when one modifies the other.: 
creates a phrase in which a noun modifies another noun.
El héroe de la historia. The hero of the story.
Los adornos del árbol de Navidad. The adornments of the Christmas tree.
Tengo que comprar una revista de modas. I have to buy a fashion magazine.
Quiero helado de vainilla. I want an ice cream of vanilla.
Compramos unas sillas de madera para la cocina. We bought  wooden chairs for the kitchen furniture.
Éste es el reloj  de oro de mi abuelo. This is  the golden watch from my grandfather. 
Sábanas de seda. Silk sheets.
In Spanish, the noun that is being described comes first, followed by the preposition "de" and the noun that describes it.
Un partido de fútbol is literally translated as “a game of soccer” but we know as “a soccer game.” 
Partido de football ( futbol) soccer game
Partido de baseball baseball game
Partido de ajedrez chess game
Partido de tenis tennis game
Torneo de natación swimming tournament
Torneo de golf golf tournament
The preposition "de"  is placed in front of the question word "quién?" 
The preposition "de"  also is placed in front of the question word "quién?" to inquire about the possessor of something. 
This Spanish expression "de quién?" is comparable to the English question word “whose?.” 
¿De quién es ésta moto ? Whose motorcycle is this?
¿De quién es la canción ? Whose song is this?
¿De quiénes son aquellos asientos? Whouse seats are those?
