Ser ser frequently refers to a permanent condition.
Estar estar often refers to a temporary condition
ESTAR
estar is irregular in some tenses.  
Following is its conjugation.

 Estar is used to express: 
Geographic or physical location
¿Dónde estás? Where are you?
Estoy en la escuela. I'm in the school.
Estamos en el parque. We are in the park.
¿Dónde están las toallas? Where are the towels?
Las toallas están sobre la silla. The towels are on the chair. 
State or condition
Estaba hablando con Héctor. I was talking with Héctor.
Estuve esparando que llamaras. I was waiting for you to call
¿Cómo está la ensalada? How's the salad?
La sopa está fría. The soup is cold.
¿Cómo estás tú? How are you?
Estoy muy bien, gracias. I am very well, thanks.

estar de acuerdo to be in agreement
estar de pie to be standing
estar en camino to be on the way
estar en las nubes to daydream 
estar al corriente to be up on
estar a la merced de to be at the mercy of
